Cape Fear Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Town of Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department conducts a youth sailing camp each summer. This is a weekly camp conducted at Cape Fear Yacht Club on Fish Factory Road. All camps run from 9am to 3:30pm. Price is $190.00 residents and $200.00 non-resident. Enrollment is on the Town of Oak Island Parks and Recreation website beginning March 29.

CFYC has a fleet of 10 Optimist Sailing Dinghies, 13 Club 420 Dinghies and two motorized safety boats. We conduct all classes with 4 instructors and several volunteers. Safety is first and foremost in all of our endeavors.

ALL CAMPERS MUST PASS A SWIMMING TEST ON DAY ONE. 

Optis

The Optimist is a one person, one sail, 8’ Sailing dinghy that is designed for sailors from 9 to 14. It is best operated by youths under 5 feet and under 120 pounds.

420's

The Club 420 is a 2 person, 2 Sail, 14 foot sailing dinghy that is designed for sailors 12 and up. It is best operated by youths 80 pounds and up.

Camp Schedule

Opti Beginners Sessions:

Campers will be introduced to the fun of sailing through classroom education and sailing in the basin at Dutchman Park, across from CFYC. Campers will learn boating basics, rigging, right of way rules, points of sail and sailing maneuvers.

Week 1: June 25 - 29

Week 2: July 9 - 13

Opti Advanced Session:

Sailors will continue to advance their sailing skills. Racing rules and tactics will be taught. Sailors who complete advanced week will earn an invitation to compete in the Rocket Regatta. 


Week of: July 16 - 20

Club 420 Beginners Sessions:

Campers will be introduced to the fun of sailing through classroom education and sailing in Dutchman Park Lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway. Campers will learn teamwork by sailing in two person crew, boating basics, right of way rules, points of sail and sailboat maneuvers.

Week 2: July 30 - Aug 3

Club 420 Advanced Session:

Sailors will continue to advance their sailing skills. Racing rules and tactics will be taught. Sailors who complete advanced week will earn an invitation to compete in the Rocket Regatta. 

Week of: Aug 6 - 10

Rocket Regatta: Aug 11 and 12

The Rocket Regatta is a race conducted at the end of sail camp. Sailors completing advanced classes will have an automatic invitation to compete. Sailors in beginning classes that wish to compete should register with their instructors. Youth races are held on Saturday August 11 at the basin at Dutchman Park. There is no charge for sailors that participated in sail camp. Awards presentation and party will be at Cape Fear Yacht Club Saturday night. Adult races are on Sunday August 12.
